Basic Knitting 101

Here you will learn how to knit and how to read the patterns. The keywords that you will see together with the pictures, will help you to read the western patterns (I means most patterns that you can search from internet.. and free patterns from yarns company like LionBrand).

You will see the symbols together with the pictures which are Japanese symbols that you will see in Japanese Knitting patterns..

This post will show basic symbols.. next time I will show the advance symbols, some will be showed together with the patterns..

Cast on (start knitting)..

(-) is Purl/(|) is Knit

Bind off on Knit side (BO)

Bind off on Purl side (BO)

Yarn Over (yo) - increase

I cord

Twist


(above) is Knit 2 Together (K2tog)/ (under) is Slip 1, Knit 1, pass slip stitch over (psso)

Purl 2 Together (P2tog) - decrease

Knit 3 Together (K3tog)

It's very interesting for me (American) to see the Japanese symbols along with the pictures. I learned to knit (basic) when I was 10. I picked it up again a few years ago. There is something so relaxing about knitting, so wonderfully tactile and rhythmic...

Your illustrations are wonderful.
I'm glad I found this lesson. I'm always looking for new stitches/techniques to use in my knitting and crocheting.

I think I need to pick up the needles again and dig into my stash.
